THUMP Mobile Testing Unit

The Problem

One limitation of dynamic load testing is the need for an impact mass to mobilize the pile. When using dynamic testing on driven piles this impact can be supplied from the pile driving hammer, but when testing drilled shafts or steel helical piles the tester must provide some kind of drop hammer or other type of pile driver to provide the impact. Traditionally, this has meant that the cost of mobilizing impact equipment to the test site must be included in the cost of testing, making the cost of testing piles prohibitively high.

The Solution

The THUMP (Truck-mount Hydraulic Unrestrained Massive Pile hammer) testing unit allows us to provide dynamic load testing services when a pile driving hammer isn’t available on site, or when the driving equipment is busy on another part of the project. The THUMP has a 5,450 kg impact mass that can be used to mobilize the pile, with no need for a crane or other support equipment. Because it is easy to reposition, it can be used to complete multiple tests in a day.

The THUMP can be mobilized to job sites throughout western Canada.
